They’re nocturnal predatory freshwater fish, and are notable not just because they look cool, but because they’re really fucking old, which is part of why they look so cool. They have lungs, and are obligate air breathers. Juveniles show external gills, like axolotls. Though they can swim (and sometimes very fast in sudden bursts), they often prop themselves up on their ‘arms,’ and scoot around the bottom that way.

My brother tells a story about his roommate’s parrot, that everyone who came to the house would say “you’re a bird!” to it so the bird would repeat the phrase back, no big. Until one day my brother was alone in the house with it and heard it say, very quietly, “I’m a bird.” My brother almost dropped a plate.
dude parrots are smart as shit. there’s a famous parrot named Alex that knew more than 100 words and could communicate on the level of a 4 year old. his last words to his caretaker were “you be good, I love you”
